ZACK MOSLEY'S SMILIN' JACK began in the Sunday Chicago Tribune and New York News on October 2, 1933 as ON THE WING. A few weeks later, Captain Joe Patterson, founder of the New York News and Chicago Tribune Syndicate, changed the title to SMILIN' JACK on December 30, 1933. From then on the feature was gradually sold to other papers acround the world. Then, to tie in with the SMILIN' JACK Sunday, ZACK MOSLEY started drawing the SMILIN' JACK daily, debuting on June 6, 1936. During the mid-thirties through the mid-sixties, SMILIN JACK' was syndicated to more that 300 daily and Sunday newspapers with a combined circualtion of over 25,000,000!

Smilin' Jack Magazine No. 1 features dailies and Sundays from 03/21/1938 to 09/18/1938, centering on the romance of aviation and high-flying adventures, with Jack wingin' from one spot to another. This brings him in contact with some unforgettable characters: the Head, Clad, Fat Stuff, and Downwind, just to name a few.

SMILIN' JACK MAGAZINE NO. 2
SUNDAYS & DAILIES - 09/19/1938 to 03/19/1939

This issues deals with Jack doing time as a prison on Death Rock - the Devils Island of the South Seas. Jack is sentenced to this desolate rock when he is mistaken for an escaped convict named Powder, a Jack look-a-like escapee from the penal colony. Zack Mosley considered this one of his better one; Fat Stuff and Downwind make their debut and go on to become major players in the strip.

SUNDAYS & DAILIES - 03/20/1939 to 08/05/1939

In this issue Jack again finds love when he meets Mary Smith, a real cute de-icer. But Mary's father Mummy, a big two-fisted ex-soldier of fortune strongly objects to Jacks designs on his daughter and we do mean STRONGLY! Jack finds himself on the receiving end of Mummy's big powerful fists each time he catches Jack near his daughter.

Downwind and Fatstuff feel that wedding bells are breaking up that old gang of theirs when Jack plans to marry Mary Smith, his current sweetheart. But wouldn't you know it - an old flame appears on the scene to trip up Jacks march to the altar!
