Nostalgia Journal

Gasoline Alley debuted under the title 'Sunday Morning in Gasoline Alley' as the bottom quadrant for the strip 'The Rectangle', written and drawn by Frank King. Featuring four cronies, working on their jalopies in the back alley where they lived, it featured Walt Wallet, Bill, Doc, and Avery, neighbors tinkering with their their cars on the weekend. Gaining in popularity, the strip soon took over, edging out 'The Rectangle' altogether and becoming an entity of its own, dailies following soon after, on August 24, 1919.

In 1921, in an effort to widen the strip's appeal, Captain Joseph Medill Patterson, strong willed publisher of the Tribune, 'suggested' to King that a baby be included in the strip. The only way to do that, King concluded, was to have one left on bachelor Walt's doorstop. Walt nicknamed the baby 'Skeezix', which means a mischievous child, as well as an endearing cowboy term for a motherless calf. The strip now had it's permanent direction and appears in papers today!

SPEC Productions is pleased to present the 'early' years of this classic American comic strip!
