ALLEY OOP,
created by V.T. Hamlin, debuted in a few scattered American
newspapers in December of 1932, originally distributed by
the soon to be defunct Bonnet-Brown Syndicate.
Upon Bonnet-Brown's
demise Hamlin continued to work in newspapers as an art department
manager at the Des Moines Register & Tribune until August
of 1933 when Herb Walker, General Manager of the Newspaper
Enterprise Association, the nation's largest newspaper syndicate
signed Hamlin to a contract that began what has become one
of the longest runs of any comic strip in American history.
In fact Alley Oop is still appearing today in several American
newspapers under the capable hands of husband and wife team
Jack and Carole Bender.
